Type of vacancy: Regular

Hours per week: 32-40

Introduction
We’re looking for a medior product designer to join KLM Data & Technology (D&T). You’ll work from our Schiphol Centre office and help shape digital products that support KLM’s ground operation. Your work contributes to our ambition to become a data-driven airline and to deliver smooth customer experiences and reliable operations.
You’ll design applications that help our operational colleagues work smarter and support our business goals. You explore user needs, translate insights into practical solutions and improve products step by step within multidisciplinary teams. You understand how design creates value in a business context and use that to guide your decisions.
What are you going to do?
You will work on internal tools used in KLM’s ground operation. These tools support the travel journey behind the scenes from the moment a flight arrives at a gate to the moment it departs again. They help the people on the ground deliver smooth aircraft turnarounds, handle baggage and keep flights running on time.
You’ll be part of a centralized design team. We plan our work per quarter. That doesn’t mean you switch projects every quarter but projects do evolve. Some wrap up, new ones start and priorities shift. You join where your skills have the most impact and you help teams move forward when they need design support.
Bring product design expertise: Work with product teams to create intuitive and effective user experiences. You balance user needs, operational goals and technical constraints. You use your skills in interaction design, UX and visual design to shape solutions that fit the reality of the operation. You help teams focus on outcomes instead of output and make decisions that deliver measurable impact.
Facilitate design: You don’t just design. You help teams work in a more user-centered way. You guide them through discovery, help them turn insights into decisions and build habits that make user value part of our daily work. You’re comfortable facilitating and helping teams grow their maturity so user-centered thinking becomes the normal way of working.
Build strong relations: You work closely with stakeholders, product managers and developers to deliver impactful solutions. You invest in relationships and become a trusted partner for the teams you support. You stay close to the people doing the work and understand their goals, challenges and context.
You also keep an independent view. You’re not tied to one product manager or team. Your role is to facilitate good decisions, keep the bigger picture in view and guide teams toward desired outcomes.
Where do you land?
You’ll join a diverse design team inside KLM D&T. The work sits in a complex enterprise environment but you’ll have real influence on how we design internal tools and support the operation.
We work hybrid. Wednesday is our main office day at Schiphol Centre. In addition, our department invests in learning, community and fun. Our Vibe Tribe organizes events that bring people together. Every quarter we run a Hack Week where you can follow courses or join sessions led by colleagues. We also have a design Community of Practice that connects designers across KLM D&T. You get four hours every two weeks to contribute to this community and help grow our design maturity.
Lastly, you work close to the operation. Our office overlooks a runway and you often work with colleagues in uniform, high-visibility vests or a radio in hand. Depending on the project, you may be interviewing baggage staff in the maze of systems underneath Schiphol or shadowing teams on the platform under the wings of an aircraft. If you enjoy aviation or the energy around airports, this is a unique place to work.

- You value feedback and use it to strengthen both your work and your own growth
- You stay curious, keep learning and share what you discover with the team
