General requirements

  • You have at least a HAVO diploma including English, mathematics and physics (or equivalent if you studied abroad)
  • You have a passport from an EU member state
  • You are between 1.58 and 2.03 m. There is no leg length measurement
  • You have a good command of the Dutch language. If you are not a native Dutch speaker, we will ask you to pass an exam at European Framework of Reference B2 level before the selection procedure

    • Licenses/certificates:

  • Class I medical*
  • (Frozen) ATPL*
  • Initial CRM
  • LPE6
  • Rating type, as mentioned in the job description
  • Radio telephony (RT) licence
  • Completed Multi Crew Course
  • You have completed the Upset Prevention & Recovery Training

    • *Both Medical and Flight Crew License must be either issued, or converted in the Netherlands for employment with KLM.

    Experience

    You have preferably completed one of the following flight training programs: KFA, NLS, CAE, EPST, MFA, or you are in possession of a Royal Netherlands Air Force/Marine General Military Pilot License (MPL-A). You must also have at least 500 hours experience on a heavy twin fixed wing aircraft (5,700 kg or more). Of the 500 hours, at least 150 hours must be in commercial aviation in the 12 months preceding your application, or you have experience as a Military Pilot.

    Selection procedure

    The selection process for the position of Commercial Pilot at KLM consists of quite a few rounds. To proceed further in the process, you must successfully complete each round.

    • Round 1: Selection of basic requirements
    • Online assessment
    • Round 3: Psychological examination
    • Round 4: Grading
    • Round 5: Interview with the Hiring Committee (COVA)
    If you pass the selections, you will undergo a security screening by the AIVD and a security check by KLM AV. You will also have a medical check at KLM Health Services, including a blood and urine test for medicine, alcohol and drugs.

    After the selection procedure

    Have you passed the selection procedure? If so, we will invite you to attend a Type Rating Course (TRC) as soon as a position becomes available.

    Employment terms and conditions

    The salary is laid down in the collective labour agreement. The salary level depends on your age, the period of employment and your exact position. A starting salary is between approximately €2,400 and a maximum of approximately €5,500 gross per month, excluding emoluments and pension subsidies.  

    As a commercial pilot at KLM, you can count on the following, amongst other things: 

    • A 4-week schedule 
    • A daily allowance when you are at your destination 
    • A pension scheme
    • IPB travel (if available) 
    • Discounts at hotels, car rental companies and more 
    • Discount at insurance companies
