Working at the heart of KLM operations

We fly to hundreds of destinations worldwide every day. This requires optimal flight preparations and execution. That is precisely what we do at Flight Operations. From route planning and drawing up cockpit rosters, to the training of crew members in our state-of-the-art flight simulators: if you work at FO your ‘cockpit’ is just as advanced as the crew's. You will enter a very digitalised world where decisions data motivated. For example, how can we fly even more fuel-efficiently.

The flight crew under your wings

As you can see, you can go in many directions within Flight Operations. But whatever direction you fly in, both customers and the flight crew are always central to your job. You are therefore customer and service oriented, but also inclusive, innovative and highly skilled. Together with us, every day you commit to an optimally motivated, qualified and informed flight crew. This is how we all ensure that KLM lives up to its reputation in relation to compliancy, flight safety and service.

Meet the crew

Stefano Zandgrond, crew controller KLM Cityhopper

‘During my aviation study I always longed for the Big Blue One.’

‘The OCC is an amazing place, where we have to work fully focussed. There is however ample time for a chat, what contributes to the pleasant atmosphere. Do we need to come into action because of a delay? We are then focussed in keeping the whole network up and running. It’s either all or nothing. Exactly what I enjoy. Just stay calm. When in contact with the crew I need to be formal yet personal at the same time. Calling colleagues during their overnight stay is never pleasant, but preventing a delay and finding the right solution is rewarding.’

Paula, senior flight dispatcher

‘Ensuring, in a difficult situation, that airplanes manage to depart on time and arrive at their destination. That's what you do it for.’

As flight dispatcher you prepare your flights. When the airplane's doors close for departure that's when your work begins as first point of contact for the crew. Paula has been promoted to senior and is now responsible for overall supervision. ‘I maintain contact, for example, with the KNMI and, where necessary, I support dispatchers in the event of disruptions. Do I enjoy my work? You bet, most definitely!'
